Why I Must Run for Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans’ Court
There is a need for reform, due diligence, and oversight in the Office of Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans’ Court. In addition to managing the probate process, issuing and recording marriage licenses, collecting inheritance taxes, the Office oversees guardianship, and monitors the health and assets of those under the care of an appointed guardian. Every function of the Office needs to be analyzed to determine cost-effective and efficient ways to streamline, update, and improve the transparency of the process and the office.
I’ve decided to run because in my role as a school board director I have seen first-hand the impact of the guardianship process, and the problems that can occur when there is a question regarding the guardianship of a minor child. As I followed up and researched the issues, I found this process resides within the office of the Register of Wills. Since then I’ve heard concerns from the experts and attorneys who deal with these issues, including advocates who work daily with children and adults, as well as family members.
As a past President of the Phoenixville School Board, the needs of youth have been my focus and passion. I have a proven track record of working to protect students and their families in a fiscally responsible manner as part of the team that oversees the almost $100 million annual budget. School Districts are sometimes involved with guardianship issues that impact the students, parents, and non-traditional familial custodial situations and there is so much we can do with outreach and improving transparency to protect both adults and minors in need of guardianship.
The Office of Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans’ Court I envision will offer education and information on the importance of having a will, guardianship and safeguarding assets. Additionally, we’ll develop a system to allow for the payment of inheritance tax through an online payment portal.
My background in developing systems for both for-profit companies and non-profit organizations gives me a unique set of skills to bring to this office and will ensure we have an efficient, effective, and ethically developed system that will protect the vulnerable while moving cases through the system in a timely manner. This isn’t simply a management or administrative position, it will require working with the legislature, judicial system, families and communities. My strong ties to our county and state elected officials will be needed to develop and implement the needed changes and documentation that will be required.
While we want to make the system easier to use and develop guidelines for guardianship that ensure minors can get needed services more quickly, we must also protect adults from losing control of their assets to questionable practices. The current for-profit business model can be misused. We need oversight and reform to protect our most vulnerable members of our community.
This election is about all of us, it is not about electing one person. It is about us working to fix our government together. I am asking for your support and the opportunity to earn your vote to be your Chester County Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans’ Court.
